The tiny, serialized soap operas taking over your customers’ video feeds present new opportunities — and risks — for advertisers.
Microdramas, an increasingly popular, highly engaging content format, are fictional series told in bite-sized episodes of a minute or two long. They’re filmed vertically and are made specifically for viewing on smartphones.
With themes such as romance and revenge and frequent cliffhangers, they’re entertaining, addictive and scaling fast. In the U.S., users on their phones are more likely to be watching microdramas than traditional streaming app content.
It’s an ideal environment for ads. But microdrama content may not be appropriate for all brands. We encourage advertisers to stay alert and review the suitability settings for their mobile and social campaigns.
Micro-Content With Macro-Potential
The trend first took off in China around 2020 and has since gone global. Microdramas are a staple on TikTok, Facebook and Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. There are also streaming apps dedicated specifically to the genre.
To hook viewers, creators often post the first few episodes on social for free, with additional episodes available for purchase or subscription. In 2026, revenues are expected to reach $14 billion.
